This state park covers 6,500 acres of land that includes 2.5 miles of sugar white sand beaches as well as three fresh water lakes. Facilities include a golf course, nature trails, beach pavilion and picnic area. Fishing, water skiing and swimming are all available on Lake Shelby. A camping area offers modern and primitive camping as well as cottages. The park is also home to the Gulf State Park Pier, the longest pier on the Gulf of Mexico.
Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge is a protected habitat site for migratory birds, nesting sea turtles and the endangered Alabama beach mouse. It covers 7,000 acres and also preserves sand dunes. There is a series of trails for visitors varying in lengths from one mile to four or more miles and traversing past dunes, wetlands, swales and maritime forests. Pets are asked to stay at home. The park is open daily during daylight hours.
